I've successfully used a variety of different microphones with my cube,
ranging from the Sony mini-condenser mike NeXT uses internally to a ~$30
hand-held Radio Shack model to a set of Sony studio headphones...  I've
had excellent results with the small Sony microphone (with AAA battery);
I'd recommend it to anyone who wants to do some 8 KHz sound recording.
Above that, of course, you get into ~>$500 DSP equipment.
