It doesn't matter whether it is done by using \special{landscape} or if the filter needs an option on the command line. I get landscape output happily from both dvips5.34 (current beta release from labrea.stanford.edu), and dvitops (you can find on june.cs.washington.edu), and both compile under sunos4.1.
