|extended widgets so I would prefer one based on Xt alone.

Xloadimage does this however it is not Xt based.  The code to load the
image and send it to a pixmap is generic enough so that you should be
able to build an Xt-based viewer with it with a minimum of work.

Xloadimage is available by anonymous ftp from expo.lcs.mit.edu in
/contrib/xloadimage.1.06.tar.Z.  It is updated periodically and
updates are announced in this group.
