Goodness yes, run, don't walk, to your nearest archive site and pick up
a copy of patch.

You can certainly get a copy.  I don't think it is "not copyrighted";
most/all of the X stuff is copyrighted.  But it certainly is free; it
comes with the MIT X tape and any vendor who doesn't provide it should
be complained at most vigorously, and if possible avoided entirely.  If
necessary I can mail you a copy (please, don't everybody start asking
for mailed copies or I'll have to start refusing; see if you can find a
closer source first!).
