Within a few years nuclear shells were developed for the 8-inch howitzer and the 155 mm howitzer, and the Russians, too, began to exhibit heavy guns thought capable of nuclear fire. Because of the danger of escalation, no nuclear shells have been fired in combat; but the nuclear capability has nevertheless dramatically increased the destructive potential of artillery."
