I went back and recompiled [t]*{toke,eval}.c with -Olimit set to 3000 as CC had complained in these modules (there may have been others that I also recompiled). It still didn't help. I gather from catching the tail end of a discussion here that all is not well with the optimizer in the DECStation 3100 camp.
