Typically, the paper that is run through a high-res imagesetter is 12 inches wide or wider. To run an 8.5x11 across the paper instead of down the paper saves paper and time. Many programs offer a way of doing this from inside the program (a paper type called something like LetterTransverse, usually), but I believe that a section of code has been distributed to some service bureaus that will make the imagestter default to printing pages in this way.
