I had some trouble lately with TAR... the file I created on our Apollo WS' wouldn't unpack as new directories weren't listed in the archive, but only used... TAR created multiple directories of the same name (I don't know how that worked... must have been a bug in 2.0 and 1.3), and tarsplit wouldn't create the dirs, so it couldn't create the files. If you send me a short tar-file (consists of 2 links or so...), I'll try to addapt my modificated source to your problem...
