Well, everyone.  I'd like to say "thanks" (in fact, I will -- "thanks")
to everyone who submitted possible solutions.  The one that finally 
worked was to swap the motherboard (still an Amptron, though).  My
machine finally works.  I hope that this is not a fix that will die
when I install more boards, we shall see.
