I've read the new version has a electroluminescent display. EL displays look great, but they're pretty power hungry to run on batteries. I played around with one here in Japan a couple months ago. It can't use batteries and I wouldn't really want to have it on my lap for more than a few minutes (that thing was heavy!). The display was very good, with high contrast from the front and sides.
