My Webster's 9th New Collegiate Dictionary says that nisus means
- to bear down, strive
- a mental or physical effort to attain an end : a perfective urge or 
endeavor

At any rate, Nisus has more muscle than any other Mac word processor/editor
and it is getting more perfect all the time.
