A modem cable will not work unless you use an appropriate "null modem"
adapter as well.
 
Apple sells an 8 pin din to 9 pin db25 cable that will let your imagewriter i
attach via the old imagewriter i cable.
 
SE/30 --adapter cable-- imagewriter i cable -- imagewriter.
