As it turns out, the two standards are more or less compatible; all you need to do is have a proper cable that hooks up the right pins. I was able to buy a cable (I believe most apple dealers carry them) for hooking up the db9 connector to the 25-pin rs232 port on the back of my Hayes modem, for a very painless 15 dollars or so.
