Most mentioned the program macps available via anonymous ftp from sumex-aim.stanford.edu in the file info-mac/unix/macps-22.shar. This program is supposed to translate Macintosh PostScript files so they can be printed on non Apple LaserWriters. I couldn't get it to work for me and don't have any more time to work with this but I thought others might be interested in the additional responses. Take the PostScript file from MacDraw (made with command-K), and another PostScript file from MacDraw (made from an empty MacDraw file and command-F, to get the PostScript prologue), and get 'macps' from sumex-aim. 'macps' is a program which will 'fix' Macintosh-generated PostScript files so that they are printable BY THEMSELVES on UNIX machines. I guess you don't really need the second PostScript file I spoke of, 'macps' comes with several PostScript header files, which should fill your needs. -------------------- From: zeke@flash.eta.cdc.com (Robert K. Scott) Date: Tue, 4 Sep 90 17:22:18 CDT Subject: Postscript problem For some reason, the Apple "capture postscript to disk" function does not prepend the first line "%!" to the postscript file. This is required by the "enscript" software that drives our laserprinters on our Suns so that the lpd does not interpret the file some other wierd way. If you are missing this, you will probably get the printed postscript file as a result. If, as you say, you are getting nothing but a blinking light, you probably didn't get the correct postscript output from the Mac. I have been using an init/cdev called "LaserFix 2.0" that seems to work really well. It provides an extra check-off button in the print dialogue box to select print-to-disk. It works great, except for the requirement that I have to add the aforementioned "%!". -------------------- From: rex@pangea.Stanford.EDU (Rex Sanders) Date: Tue, 4 Sep 90 19:04:47 PDT Subject: Re: (summary) Stupid Novice Question: How do I get PostScript from MacDraw II? You need a copy of 'macps' (at least if your host is a Unix system). This program converts Mac Postscript to real, printable Postscript. Should be on Sumex somewhere. -------------------- From: JENNERR@DARWIN.NTU.EDU.AU Date: Wed, 5 Sep 1990 11:39:45 GMT Subject: Postscript Hi, I saw your summary on Net News wrt Postscript files. I must admit I didn't read it all and you are probably fed up with it all anyway. If you are interested and don't already have it, I have a modified LaserWriter driver which dumps the file to be printed into a postscrip file instead of seding it to the L'Writer. -------------------- From: claris!rick@ames.arc.nasa.gov (Rick Boarman) Date: Tue, 4 Sep 90 14:48:02 PDT Subject: MacDrawII & PS The trick to getting a PostScript file from the Apple driver is to hold down the appropriate command key BEFORE hitting OK with the mouse. I tried it in MacDraw II v1.1 and it works fine. -------------------- From: Jim Walker Date: Tue, 4 Sep 90 23:01:14 -0400 Subject: Re: (summary) Stupid Novice Question: How do I get PostScript from MacDraw II? Organization: University of South Carolina, Columbia Did anyone tell you about LaserFix? It's similar to mypagesetup, but has check boxes equivalent to both command-f and command-k. I think it's at info-mac. -------------------- From: bit!toma (Tom Arneberg) Date: Wed, 5 Sep 90 14:59:57 PDT Subject: Postscript from MacDraw! Casey -- first, thanks for posting the summary of how to get postscript from MacDraw. I had never done it before, but I wanted to let you know that I *DID* manage to accomplish it using some of the comments you summarized. Here's exactly what I did: (1) turn off background printing (multifinder) via "chooser" (2) print document in MacDraw II 1.0v4 (3) Immediately after clicking "OK", press AND HOLD command-F What happened then was a dialog box popped up saying "creating postscript file", and the file Postscript0 suddenly appeared in the same folder as the MacDraw application was located. My guess is that the key is to hold down the command-F keys until the file is created. Also, I'm using Finder 6.1.5 and System 6.0.5 on a Mac II.
