One thing that might help is to get Adobe's version of the LaserWriter
screen fonts.  These have true italic, bold, and bold italic bitmaps
and match the actual LaserWriter fonts much better than Apple's.

I can't guarantee that Word knows how to handle them properly, but
with most applications they produce very good results.
