This lockup seemed to be provoked by an IBM RS/6000 that was writing into one of the 280's filesystems. The NFS Jumbo Patch did not cure the problem. I subsequently learned of a patch known as "nfs_dw", a changed ufs_bmap.o module, which fixes a problem with nfsd hanging on a memory page that never gets unlocked due to a bug.
