We've just tried to put a Adaptec SCSI controller and VGA monitor into
an old 4000 and an older 3000.  Won't work.  We've tried switching to
the eight-bit slot and even using a Tandy 8-bit VGA card (the latter
combination is known to work in a Tandy 4000LX).  Still no go.

Any ideas?
