Umm, what lasy font files are you using that don't work with the new font selection stuff? Actually, this plus some other symptoms you described seemed to indicate that you might have been using an older version of the fontsel macros (check fontsel.readme in [anonymous.tex.inputs.latex-mainz] on ymir.claremont.edu for release dates).
