I think people would be less upset about the cost of the various unix products if they could be assured of adequate support, upgrade policy, and the like. People are used to getting upgrades for little more than distribution costs (esp. in acedemia) and now companies are starting to "unbundle" this and proper product support, without lowering the cost of the package. People don't like having to pay for something they used to getfree.
