Thanks to all who responded.  The problem has been solved, more or less.

After trying many of the various solutions (several termcap entries were sent
to me, none seemed to work quite write) and attempting to drag it out of
terminfo we finally settled on just aliasing aixterm to xterm.  Seems to work
ok, though repoainting the screen after things like 'less' and 'vi' takes
some getting used to.
