Lines: 40 I've been meaning to answer this request for a while .. and I hope its not too late : What I think would be good in R5 1). Paul Jensen (of Digital Equipment) has drafted a protocol extension proposal which he has called the WormHole extension. Apart from the cool name, it sets forth a series of protocol extensions that are designed to take advantage of new "smart" framebuffers being offered by DEC and Sun (not jointly of course). The part that appeals to me the most is the ability to send multiple (simple) polygons in one protocol request. I don't know if anyone else is having performance problems with XFillPolygon .. but we sure are. Another neat thing it provides for is to send the foreground color along with the shape. I appeal to each of you to support this protocol extension and help it get into R5 .. 'cause its a good one. 2). Another good thing to look at would be adding some policies to the ICCCM about how selections and selection formats get handled. Specifically, it would be great if there were a bank of format converters registered that an application could call in order so that it could accept a selection. An example would be .. some application posts a selection in format "X Window Dump" .. and another application can only accept PostScript(tm) ... If that application could request a conversion service to invoke the appropriate converter .. then life would be alot easier for application writers. I think all the sub systems are in place to support something like this .. certainly the ICCCM is specific about posting selections with a format atom. That's my two cents worth, Thanks, Jeff Markham markham@cadence.com
