I'm about to plunge myself from the sidelines into
the depths of an ongoing DSP project, and I welcome
any sage advice and pointers to standard references,
source code archives, magazines/journals, "user's groups",
etc.  

Specifically, where can I find public domain (or cheap)
source libraries for basic FFTs, filters, etc?
(especially on-line code, suitable for UNIX or Mac 
environments)?
