I now have a directory $(EMACS) which contains the following subdirectories: etc,info, lisp and lock, all of which are writable by everybody. Is that normal. I don't like having whole directories with 777 mode. My second question is a matter of ownership: I usually make a passwd entry for the software I install. Will it be a problem if the $(EMACS) Directory does not belong to root or bin? Can you please e-mail me answers, I will try to post a summary if enough people are interested.
