You don't really have to parse them yourself (unless you are a masochist).
Instead you can use the metafile interpreters supplied with the drivers from
GSS. I work for GSS, though not in the group that deals with the CGI stuff.
Why don't you send email to barbara@gssc.gss.com (she is one of our technical
support people) to get the info you would like...
