Back in the good 'ol days, when we had to slog through 10 feet of snow
to get to our glass TTYs, we had another level of parentheses, consisting
of [,] and <esc>.  "]" closed off all open "(" or an open "["; <esc>
closed off all open "(" and/or "[".
