I've This is a program from the PC-DOS world that will take a number of files and compress them using a number of differant methods to get the smallest file, and then stick them all combined into one file with the .arc extension. Sort of like compressing them and then tar'ing them under Unix. It is available for PC-DOS, amiga dos, atari tos, Unix, and even a few 8 bit computers. > >I decoded this stuff by uploading it to a PC and running PKXARC on it. >Then you'll find its formatted with Wordstar (yuk!). I left the files in the wordstar format to preserve anything extra that someone with wordstar can use. There are several programs in the archive to translate Wordstar format to text, including C source for a Unix filter. To get it the conversion program with C source, send the following two line message to archive@mgse.UUCP or archive%mgse@rex.cs.tulane.edu set uuencode send other/scsi-bbs/area06/wstxt.zip > >A lot of files on the bbs are in ZIP format and you need the PKUNZIP utility >which can be found on the archive (again its a DOS program). No you can not use PKUNZIP to extract a .arc file, but programs to unarc and unzip for Unix are already out there, check out alt.sources, comp.sources.unix and comp.sources.misc. To get it the unzip and arc programs with C source, send the following two line message to archive@mgse.UUCP or archive%mgse@rex.cs.tulane.edu set uuencode send other/unix/arcsv11.sh send other/unix/unzip30.tar You may want to type 'arc' and 'unzip' and see if they are already installed. These programs are available from a number of FTP archives as well as the mail server at mgse. > >It would be even better if the files were in text format (instead of Wordstar).
