My aha1540 refuses to boot from the scsi disk! help!

first my setup:

386sx w 2MegByte
1.2M floppy
st1096N 84Meg scsi disk
st02 scsi/floppy controller.
msdos ver3.30


  When the st02 is connected to the st1096n the machine boots properly from
the hard disk or floppy (if one is inserted). If I connect the scsi cable
to a AHA1540A instead of the st02 I get problems. 
The machine will boot from the floppy properly and then I have complete 
access to the hard disk. 
The machine will not boot from the hard disk.
 The AHA1540 finds the hard disk and then reports
    "no operating system found on scsi device 0 "

The st02 seems to find the operating system. Whats wrong?
