Try disabling the STDR jumper on the hp drive. This should do the trick!

This MAY be the jumper block sequence for your drive. I'm not sure:

                                 0 = Open    1 = Short

          
                             PIN 1: Reserved

                             PIN 2: Initiate synchronous data xfer request

                                 1 = Enable SDTR

                             PIN 3: Parity

                                 0 = Parity checking disabled
                                 1 = Parity checking enabled

                             PIN 4: Auto spin up

                                 0 = Drive will NOT spin up until host sends
                                     START UNIT command

                                 1 = Drive will automatically spin up on 
                                     power on

                             PINS 5-7: SCSI address
