More on problem:

Looks like it might be the power supply.  I formatted the drive
on another machine.  the interesting thing is that I even put the
disk drive on its own power supply.  So this tells me that power to
the motherboard must be bad ( I even tried a different mother board).

Can anyone tell me what the -12V on the motherboard does?
