I have the news software (not the source) running on a UMAX 2.4.34
but when the active file contains more than 512 entries binaries such
as readnews core dump. From past experience on BSD machines in know
that a limit of 512 is hard coded as the max number of active entries.

Has anybody got a solution for me. (such as source which will compile on
sysV or binaries which can cope with up to 2000 active entries.
