I had a similar problem with an IBM PC/XT. In this case, any combination of two boards that had serial ports on them would result in the system not recognizing any of the serial ports properly. With only one board installed (even the HP board that had two serial ports), things worked fine. The boards that I was trying were : (1 Zoom Telephonics Modem (2 HP serial board w/ 2 serial ports (3 DTK board w/ one printer port and one serial port All boards were configured according to the documentation that came with them and I was very careful to not have any conflicting addresses or interrupt levels.
