When I first posted a question about this problem I received many helpful
responses.
These were mainly TSRs (activated by the keyboard interrupt) that killed the
apparently hung program.

Unfortunately I lost two replies.
One was called "uncrash" and the other (which was waiting to be posted in 
c.b.i.p) and was called something like "altbreak".
I would be very grateful if the senders of the these articles could resend
them.
