Hmmm...sounds like you're running under MultiFinder. In that case, even if you have 8 MB in your Mac the Finder only has a small portion of that memory allocated for its own use. The best thing to do is to use the "Set Startup" command to select Finder upon bootup, and *then* restart the Mac and rebuild the DeskTop file.
