Walter,  You have mentioned this line of -= thing locking up your 
computers before.  Have you tried it with other symbols.  It is possible 
that you are giving the software and/or hardware a line longer then it 
can handle.  If the line is too long, if the synthesizer is being sent 
more then it can haldle at once, it might lock up.    Try with different 
character combinations, and different length lines.
