Shel, Of course during my writing Vocal-Eyes I also ran across the problem of the DECtalk. It is one of the slowest responding synthesizers on the market. I have just recently rewrote my driver for the DECtalk in order to speed it up even more. It is now as fast as it can possible be. You say you may wait more then 2 seconds to start reading a line. This sounds extreemly longer than it should take. It would make a difference on what BAUD rate your DEC is running. Most come at 9600 BAUD however, there are a few that run at 1200 BAUD. If yours is 1200 BAUD, you might think of getting it changed to 9600 BAUD. I am sure this would speed things up for you. Best of luck!
