I received about 10 responses to my cry for information. TurboC was recommended by an overwhelming margin. I got NO responses from persons who prefer MSC. The only two things going for MSC, it seems, is that it supports Windows (which it had better), and that it generates more compact code, in most cases. All other factors seem to be with Borland. Since I do not own Windows, I do not need the Windows support. I have now ordered the Turbo C++ Professional development package and am eagerly awaiting its arrival. Thank you again to all who responded.
