I haven't been following this discussion, so forgive me if this has
been mentioned before.  A really simple fix that would provide the
advantages of both schemes while getting rid of the disadvantages
would be to name the patches with a date *and* a number.  That way,
everyone is at least somewhat satisfied and noone can really complain.
For example, the patch name might look something like:

			  #35-Sep-20-1990

Then again, I don't see any real reason to change the patch names.  I
happen to *like* the date-as-name idea myself.  And, as Henry said,
the entire patch list for the current version is always included in
the patch.  Complaining about patch naming schemes seems like more
effort than it is really worth.  But then again maybe I am missing
something here.
