Message-ID: <1149@beguine.UUCP> Date: 25 Sep 90 04:12:25 GMT Sender: usenet@beguine.UUCP Lines: 26 From what I've seen of the Aprotek 2400 baud modem, I would suggest spending the extra $20 for the Supra (or any other brand). My friend has one of these Mini-Modems. It is about the size of a C-64 ROM cartrige (remember those things? :) It has about a 6 inch 25-wire ribbon cable (non-shielded) connected to a DB-25 connector for the serial port. It has only one phone jack in it (i.e. you must buy a splitter yourself for $2.50 if you want to connect your phone to it as well). It has no external power supply, draws all its' power from the port. This could be very dangerous on a A500 that doesn't have a beefed-up power supply. Especially if you are running an external drive, RAM expansion, etc. It also does NOT have all the Hayes command S registers in it to set modem parameters. And unlike the Supra, it does not have the non-volitile memory to store you S registers even if it is off. (The Supra can store 4 phone numbers in its current revision, as well as Parity, BPS, Stop Bits, etc...) In fact we were having problems with it connected to an A2000 running a BBS, where we had no problems with one of those no-name brand 2400 baud modems that Computer_Direct sells (used to be Protecto). I got my Supra 2400 e modem from Computability in 1 week after sending a personal check. It was $112 including a very well shielded 6-foot RS-232 cable (as thick as the printer cable). It was well worth the cost. --
