I don't know about the XGA directly, the Targa-16 uses a 16 bit pixel, with 5 bits for red, green, and blue (and one extra bit, Targa uses for overlay). (15 bits = 32768 colors, but then you probably already knew that! ;-) I'm sure they are doing something similar.
