It really doesn't matter that much which one (v42bis or MNP5) (IMHO) if the main thing you are going to do is trandsfer files between the two of you. Both standards are supported by lots of diiferernt wait, rented fingers...... different modems. Most of your mainstreeanmn modems support v42bis but lots support MNP5.
