I won't bet my life on this, but NeXT told me:

  (1) they have hardware flow control

  (2) they re-did the analog section of the serial lines giving you
	high-speeds (38400) w/o errors but the redesign took away
	the +5 on ttyb (no powered serial lines now).

In general, they wanted to address all known problems, but had to 
 (for some reason) zap the +5v doing it.
