(a) One of these two files was corrupted. Both are the same size. How to find the bad egg: say 'tail tex.poo' at each and the bad guy has junk, the good guy has english. (Now the "junk" could well be german or french or something!) I killed the bad guy. (b) In any case, the trouble had been at initex, he'd say "tex.pool file must start with 2 numbers" when the top of either tex.poo file felt fine. He gives this error even when he can't *find* the file! I just put the working (noncorrupted) tex.poo file into all directories concievable. TEXFMTS, TEXFMTS.386, TEXINPUTS, maybe a few others. Basically, carpetbombing.
