These commands seem to work better than those included with Esix D. They can even read the DOS partition on my hard disk (Mess-DOS 3.3), and they correctly handle subdirectories without barfing with "getfat??" garbage. Since many of you probably don't get unix-pc.sources, I can mail copies to a few people, or (re)post (where???) if there is enough interest.
