a little tidbit from the latest _request_ magazine (sam goody's instore
mag type'o'thang):

mississippi-raised, l.a. based singer/songwrite victoria williams was 
apparantly too quirky for mainstream tastes when geffen released her 
debut lp in 1986. williams' belated sophmore effort _swing the statue!_
(rough trade), stands a better chance at reaching a receptive constit-
uency. the new disc tones down williams' vocal eccentricities and allows
her estimable writing abilities to come through. likewise, the production
(by percussionist micahel blair and williams) is more sympathetic this 
time around, lending understated authority to these sketches of lost and
no-so-lost innocence.
