pardon my complete ignorance, but would it be ridiculous to ask where an 
engineering undergraduate could obtain laser equipment (or plans and 
parts) for personal experimentation in optics and communications?  

please don't tell me to go to my local physics lab.  if i thought they'd let 
me borrow their equipment i wouldn't have asked.  they're too smart for that 
:)
