I guess it's history sort of explains its quality. I never had the misfortune of using MaxiComm, so I can't comment on their relative merits. As it was I bought A-Term (not having anything else available) and used it until Dave Wecker began releasing his vt100 emulator. Later, I switched to Handshake. Ironically I was actually able to put A-Term to good use recently.
