Thanks to everyone who responded about my serial port/modem problem!
Someone (I can't remember his name and I've since deleted the reponses)
suggested that the 1488 was probably dead.  I took a chance, bought a
new one for $2.50 (quite a burn!) and got a techie at work to put it
in.  

And it worked!  I can FTP/usenet/call BBS's from home now!
