Just found that out recently. Evidently "tar cvf /dev/nrctp /u/arai" would be OK. QUESTION: Is "cd /u/arai ; tar cvf /dev/nrctp ." safe? I was recently bitten by this bug, after making a tape for someone to bring overseas; when he arrived, he called me to complain that I had not put all the files on the tape!
