"...YModem and ZModem are about equally fast, though I know of no software for the DEC Rainbow that includes ZModem." Well, in the STRICTEST sense, this may be true. BUT, when conbined with a fossil, BINKLEY runs just fine on the Rainbow,... AND it does have ZModem included in it. That is the main reason that I took up with Binkley in the first place: zmodem, & batch downloads (with wildcard file specifiers) with something other than Kermit. What is true, however, is that there is no DSZ/Omen/Chuck Forsberg implementation of ZModem available on the Rainbow. Binkley uses Zed-Zap, which is a variant of the basic ZModem protocol. To quote Joe Jared, a local sysop: "It's a variant of zmodem used by Binkley, Front Door, and other front end mailing systems.. For 9600 baud connections, it sends 8192 byte blocks as opposed to 1024 byte blocks." (originally posted in zmodem echo 7/24/90). Some months ago I had some troubles with Zmodem transfers on my Rainbow (using Binkley) & a clone (using DSZ). A question to Chuck Forsberg got the following response: ".....I also don't have access to a Rainbow computer,....A unique situation such as yours requires some serious consulting services." Have you contacted him about a modification to his DSZ implementation to take advantage of the NEC uart the Rainbow uses (instead of the 8250 family of uarts in IBM-clones)? If I can be of help, give a holler. Later. C source for X/Y/Zmodem is available publically. Although written for unix and VMS, you might be able to port it to the Rainbow. You might find an older version on a local board; you definitely get it when you register DSZ. On one hand, I'd bet Chuck would be more amenable to questions such as yours from a registered user. On the other, there's little reason for someone to register DSZ for use on a Rainbow with only the hope that Chuck will get it working there. George ------------------------------
