On my HP-9000/375 I installed /etc/resolv.conf with contents: domain apl.washington.edu nameserver 128.95.120.1 nameserver 128.95.96.120 nameserver 128.95.96.121 which allows telnet, ftp, rlogin, etc to work fine.
